California Citrus - California Navel Orange quality is excellent now that fruit is coloring naturally and no gas is required. Most shippers are currently in the more favorable Washington variety. Sizes are peaking with 72 and 88 followed by 56 count, heaviest to fancy grade. Over the last week, fog and rain have cut back harvest for some shippers, slightly firming the declining market. As we move into the peak of the season, there are plenty of opportunities to promote navels. There are deals available on all Navel Orange sizes and packs.
District 1 (Central California Valley) lemon production is underway and will be in full production through May. Production out of District 2 (Coastal) has slowed down considerably, which is typical during this time of year, but looks to start back up in earnest in May. District 3 (Desert) production has peaked and will continue with lighter production through February. Lemon volume out of District 3 is approximately 25% lighter than last season. Size is peaking at 115 to 140 count, heaviest to fancy grade. Smaller sizes continue to be very tight and should be pre-booked.
